Reasons to Liver Cleanse

Foods to Avoid

  • Dairy, red meat, coffee, processed foods, soft drinks, sugar, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, butter and margarine, salt

 

Substitutes for the above foods

  • Dairy can be replaced with nut, seeds, LSA (linseed sunflower, almond mix) to be added to cereals, porridge in the morning. Soya milk or rice milk. Tofu. Soya yoghurt. Tahini Paste. Halva.
  • Proteins i.e. red meat can be replaced with nuts as above, tofu, lentils, kidney beans and other beans, chick peas. Whole grain rice, pastas and buckwheat noodles. Fish and chicken can be eaten in moderation.
  • Alcohol soft drinks can be replaced with liquid refreshments can include water, fresh juices (limit to one per day) particularly vegetable combinations, herbal teas of choice, green tea and dandelion tea/coffee are recommended. Lemon juice with water.
  • Butter and margarine can be replace by tahini paste (particularly on toast/bread with honey), mashed avocado. Food can be lightly cooked in olive oil.
  • Sugar snacks can be relaced with fruit, fruit salads, honey, fresh fruit juice, dried fruits i.e. dates, figs, apricots, prunes

 

Foods to eat freely

  • Fruit and vegetables. Include lots of orange coloured fruit and vegetables. Variety is important!!!
  • Whole grains i.e. muesli (not toasted), porridge, rye bread (from health food shop), any whole grain bread can be used also but limit to two slices a day. Buckwheat noodles (excellent with pastas and Asian dishes). Spelt pasta.
  • Water, at least 2 litres per day, herbal teas.

 

Sample Day’s Diet

 

Breakfast

- Fruit salad – Your choice of fruits.

- Add two to three tablespoons of LSA Mix.

- Optional - Top with banana cream (banana, cashew nut water and honey blended with blender)

 

Lunch

Rocket Salad with fish or vegetable patty.

 

- Salad – rocket, tomato’s, Spanish onion, cucumber, grated carrot and beetroot, sprouts, pine nuts. 1 tbsp of LSA mix.

- Dressing – flaxseed oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, soya sauce and a touch of honey.

- Serve with canned tuna, or steamed/baked fish of choice. Other options may be lentil or tempeh patties either homemade or purchased from a health food shop.

- Optional – one slice of rye bread.

 

Dinner (serves one to two)

Buckwheat Noodles with Spinach and Lentil sauce

1 onion

5 gloves of garlic

2-3 tomatoes chopped

Spinach

Olive oil

Dash of soy sauce or tempari

Half a cup lentils (can be substituted with tuna)

Basil fresh or dried

Buckwheat noodles

Lemon juice from half a lemon

Honey - one tsp

 

- Cook lentils until tender, approx 30 minutes, then drain.

- In a pan lightly fry onions, garlic tomatoes and basil add chopped spinach and lentils at the end. Add lemon juice and a teaspoon of honey.

- Boil buckwheat noodles in a pot until a la dente.

 

Snacks

- Rice crackers with hommos dip (from health food shop) or guacamole (avocado mashed with crushed garlic, half a juiced lemon, a dash of soy sauce, pepper

- Fruit, nuts and seeds.

- Pepitas lightly fried in soy sauce, served with chopped apricots.

- Halva
